Hello, Chiropractic friends! Dr. Amy here, president and co-founder of Animal Chiropractic Education, where we empower veterinarians and chiropractors to build successful animal chiropractic practices. Today, I want to talk about finding common ground—a crucial part of what we do, but one that sometimes feels like an uphill climb.
A Family Story
Just last weekend, I visited my family to celebrate my father's upcoming 90th birthday on October 31st. My father is an incredible person: a hard worker who raised five children and ran a business, always emphasizing the value of setting goals and connecting with people. He’s independent to the core, never meeting a stranger, always embracing life. But over time, as he’s aged, his mobility has become a challenge.
As we’ve noticed with him, balance and cognitive function can go hand in hand. He relies on a walker, and his mobility challenges have impacted his independence. My family and I find ourselves at a crossroads: we want to encourage him and my mom to move to a place where they can receive regular assistance, yet they fear the loss of autonomy. They’re still living on their beloved farm, and for them, mowing the lawn is a symbol of independence. But the reality is that maintaining their lifestyle has become increasingly risky.
Bridging Perspectives
We’ve had to find common ground, helping my parents view this transition as a step toward maintaining independence, not losing it. We’re reframing it as an opportunity for safety, better health, and daily support, so they don’t face a catastrophic event before they realize the value in this change.
And this brings me back to Animal Chiropractic.
Finding Common Ground in Animal Chiropractic
In our profession, we encounter similar challenges. Veterinarians and chiropractors who are new to animal chiropractic might initially see it as a daunting change. They worry about the investment, the time, and the shift in practice focus. Yet, like my parents, once they begin to envision the freedom, increased income, and fulfillment animal chiropractic can offer, they see the potential.
It often starts with empathy: we ask questions like, "Where do you feel stuck? What could make your practice more fulfilling?" From there, it becomes easier to illustrate how animal chiropractic can bridge those gaps, leading to a stronger, more balanced career and ultimately greater independence in their work.
Building Community in Animal Chiropractic
